I think what is wrong with this image for me is the exposure, you shot in auto which took some of the control away and understandable tried to turn everything to 18% gray, normally this is fine but with the expanse of blackness of the water the exposure of the foreground rock was doomed.. try spot metering in full manual or if you want to stay in auto use spot metering to meter of whatever area you want correctly exposed and use the exposure lock if your camera has one..

I think the composition would be improved by not showing the foreground rock at all (it is als a bit overexposed).

This photo is not overexposed, it is well within the allowed levels of the histogram with no clipping toward either end. For those not living in the midwest and unfamiliar with the characteristics of white granite/limestone/sandstone formations the colorations of pure white through all ranges of gray to black are natural to this type of rock. The photo is an actual representation of the area photographed. Although we may disagree on how we like to see photos shot, we need to keep in mind that different areas of the world offer various challenges to light, tone, colorations, and seasonal differences in light temperature. Not all photos should be judged within the same 'eye'. I stand by my histogram and my extensive familiarity with local geology. The photo exposure is accurate. Thanks for your input - Charly.

The area mentioned is in fact over exposed, the histogram has nothing to do with it or the exposure in that area.. Its a common mistake to make
The histogram is an indicator of exposure and will look fine if small areas are over or under exposed. in fact I never ever use it..

May I suggest you try clipping settings on your camera. That will show the over exposure.
As for the explanation on geographic conditions, I am in fact a travel photographer, and have traveled extensively throughout the united states.. (check my gallery)
as for the exposure, your camera was on auto, so taking your explanation regarding geographic locations, you are saying that while different areas require different approaches, you are happy to allow your camera to decided the exposure and by that logic you think it always gets it right ?
